BMI Calculator

Calculate Body Mass Index from height and weight.

What does this tool do?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body weight relative to height, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The World Health Organisation uses it as a population-level screening tool to identify potential weight-related health risks. The four categories are: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), and Obese (30 and above). It is a starting point for health conversations — not a medical diagnosis on its own.

How to use it

  1. Select your unit preference: metric (cm and kg) or imperial (ft, in, and lb).
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Your BMI value and category appear instantly, with a visual marker on the scale.

Pro tips

  • BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle. Athletes and bodybuilders often show an "overweight" BMI despite having low body fat — this is a known limitation of the metric.
  • For a more complete picture of health, use BMI alongside waist circumference and body fat percentage.
Example

Height: 175 cm | Weight: 70 kg

BMI: 22.9
Category: Normal weight ✓

The marker appears in the healthy range of the gauge.

When would you use this?

  • Tracking how BMI changes over the course of a fitness or weight-loss programme
  • Filling out a health insurance application that asks for your BMI
  • Understanding whether your current weight falls in a healthy range for your height
